Oh lovely angels what have you done? Is Dirty Pair responsible for the “female allergy?”

vlcsnap-00001

Dirty Pair was never a series that clicked with me when it was released on DVD earlier this decade.  I gave a few episodes a shot, but there was something about it that just didn’t do it for me.  Tastes change over the years, and I’ve always heard positive things about the television series, so when it hit the internet in it’s entirety along with some serviceable subtitles a few months ago, I immediately went to check it out.

I just finished reading Gunsmith Cats Revised and you should start

vol1cover

I think it’s safe to say that Kenichi Sonoda should be a household name for anyone who got into japtoons and comics in the mid to late 90’s, but nowadays that does not seem to be the case.  Consider this a public service announcement.

Revisiting old video store rental cartoons: Ushio & Tora

ushio 1r

Once upon a time I, too, was a wide eyed young lad, freshly exposed to the medium we all know and love as Japanimation. Like all budding Japanese cartoon watchers, I had horrible taste, and wouldn’t know a good show if it bit me in the ass. Thankfully, the selection at the local video store made most of my viewing decisions for me, keeping at bay the horror of things like Dancougar simply by not having the first tape. Unfortunately, even a limiting my selection to choice OVAs from CPM, ADV and Animeigo was not enough to keep me from making some bad decisions, decisions which I would only come to regret years after the fact. Not watching Ushio & Tora was one of them.

Loot Post: Something old, something new, somthing borrowed, something blue.

Nabbed some good stuff this past month.

DSC01148

Old: Lain – Haven’t seen this since it was out on VHS.  Can’t wait to revisit it.

New: Pluto Vol 5 – Still on vol 2, trying to pace myself for the next 6 months as the last 3 trickle out.

Borrowed: Heat Guy J – Always wanted to grab this but never got around to it.  Now that Funimation re-released it in a conveniently compact (although likely lower bit rate) package I decided to nab it.

Blue: Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA – If you don’t like Tylor you are some kind of villain.

Because I know you care: My Fall 2009 season watch list

The nice fellows over at that blog that makes the cool charts have done it again so I figure I might as well talk about what I intend to watch this fall.  You can go somewhere else for episode summaries and screen shots but something might show up here if a show turns out really good or really bad.  On to the cartoons!

Loot post: Gunsmith Cats Revised Edition

I love it when Amazon shipping estimates are wrong in my favor.  This wasn’t supposed to make it here till the 22nd.

Really looking forward to reading these.  Never did get around to it back when it was first coming out.  I really like these omnibus editions that many companies are doing these days.  Keep them coming!

Adolescent Girl’s Combining Robot Z-MIND: The Battling Days of the “Shitamachi” Virgins. Yes, it’s actually called that.

Zmind1r

Once in a while a show comes along that makes you wonder why a company even bothered.  Something outside the taste scope of even the most eclectic fans, bland in every conceivable way,  no existing fan base to cash in on, the kind of cartoon that doesn’t even have that delicious Central Park Media camp value that makes a show so bad it’s good.  Z-Mind is one of them.

Ninety minute chase sequences from dawn of the OVA: Birth

birth1r

While browsing the used section at the local movie store, I came across Birth.  Knowing fairly little about it other than a vague recollection of a not so favorable review (it’s more phoned in than negative really,) over on Animeondvd, I decided to pick it up and give it a whirl based on a cheap price and some appealing box art (inexplicably featuring a character who appears absolutely nowhere in the entire cartoon.)  I was pleasantly surprised Continued…

Since this mug would have power rivaling even a GOD or DEVIL!

My invincible black steel castle of beverage consumption has arrived, and it is awesome.  The text on it reads “Since this machine would have power rivaling even a GOD or DEVIL!  I wish it was a little larger, but that’s ok, it makes up for it in panache.
